Dressing for a Great British Summer

It seems we get less and less time to adapt and think about what to wear in the UK. With heatwaves in February to snow in April, our wardrobes have to be on red alert!

A transitional wardrobe would usually see us adding layers or wearing less as the seasons change, but in the UK, we don't know where the hell we are, or what to wear, on a daily basis!

I was so excited to be showing off some flesh, albeit short lived, when the sun came back last week; wearing vest tops and shorts again seemed kinda liberating after months of being cuddled up in warm layers.

Now, a week later, I am back wearing a fleece top, trousers and warm socks, with a blanket over me! What the actual.....???

What a different a week makes....

In the brief heatwave,  I thought to myself, whilst rummaging through my generous wardrobe, 'I haven't actually got many summer clothes' but in truth, I think, I have just forgetten how to style up my existing wardrobe to work for summer, a problem I seem to face at every seasonal change!

In the colder months, I wear warm layers of mostly bright coloured streetwear pieces, from jumpsuits to hoodies to printed trousers- fun, winter outfits- but when the sunshine comes, things really start to get excitiing, as you are not hiding your amazing outfits under a coat!

As I've said before, I'm not one to pack away my winter/summer wardrobe as the sessons change, I dont have the time or a place to put it all, if I'm honest! As things are with the UK weather lately, we need to keep all of our wardrobe at easy access, all year round! I was right all along!

A trusty oversized hoodie will warm you up after the surf!

As soon as the sun is out, so are my vest tops (usually cropped) and my shorts (often patterned and/or made by an indepepndent designer). I've not been much of a summer dress wearer over the past few seasons but an unexpected new obsession can pop up at any point for me, so I never rule out the return of a fashion item, that may already be in my wardrobe.

One thing that we must not get into is buying a whole new wardrobe at the change of every season, this is supporting fast fashion, which has a negative impact on the planet and in your pocket! Updating your wardrobe is fine but do it at a slower pace. Everyone likes buying new stuff, just consider these three rules when shopping.

Do you really need it?
Do you really love it?
Does it look good on you?

I have been following these rules for the past few years, I admit, I still get it wrong occassionally, but if you consider these rules as a guide, you are on the right track!

Finally, as always, the No Debutante blog is keen to promote and support independent designers, many of whom are also supporting sustainable, slow fashion.

Enjoy the summer when it finally arrives and rethink your wardrobe!

Transitional Traumas!

As the seasons change and winter begins to loom over us like a bad dream (yeah, I hate the winter! ) it's time to take a look at what No Debutante has been wearing in these transitional months.

There is nothing more exciting than the arrival of Spring and not having to wear a coat anymore, well for a few months anyway, and what about the freedom of being able to wear just shorts and a vest top every day? I really look forward to that time of year and that side of transitional fashion but the other end of transitional fashion just doesn't appeal to me at all!

I do not embrace the colder weather, I am, without a doubt, a summer person. I will admit to romanticising over the idea of being able to wear my faux furs and beanie hats again but this will be short lived, soon I will realise that I will have to wear overcoats and winter woollies every day, for half a year or more, (the weather in the UK honestly sucks) I think I am already over it!

September started like this, I had a glowing tan and I was still refusing to even consider wearing extra layers. Realising I wasn't in Majorca anymore, I allowed a half cover up of a long sleeve hoodie or trousers but that was all, it was still crop tops a go-go for No Debutante.

I subtly added a red beret - that I had spotted in Vogue magazine on my holidays and thought I could probably pull it off - into the mix late September , but, slowly, the cold crept in with October, which is where you find me now, wearing scarves, tights and cardigans! I am absolutely furious!

From happily leaping about in summer layers to warm layers and bloody tights! (Still managing to sneak a crop top under those layers though!)
Bringing in transitional styling with sporty shorts and popper pants

My super comfy striped Duvet Days co-ord is a perfect transitional outfit and can be worn layered up with jackets and boots as the cold kicks in.

Introducing the No Debutante new favourite Topshop Vinyl beret! Yeeeeessssss!

Bringing in the clashing prints this Autumn in Keith Haring style monochromes and my newly purchased vintage crop jacket (that makes me feel like a late 1980s pop star,)
both pair up a treat with that beret and some Tezla earrings!

Happy Transitional October Fashionistas!

Transitional Streetwear

This is how No Debutante dives into Autumn with streetwear influenced layers, in hoodies, culottes, tees layered over long sleeve tees, bright coloured bombers, sheer layers and a whole lotta Adidas! In an autumnal palette of bright red, blues, baby pinks and monochromes, styled up with a playful swagger.

What are you wearing this autumn? Don't follow trends of what the media tells you to wear, use your imagination, follow your mind and get creative.

Style Obsession! The oversized shirt

No Debutante is still in love with the Oversized shirt!

With a penchant for eighties oversizing and prints, the fascination with the oversized shirt had always been there, then one of my fave brands Lazy Oaf started creating some amazing versions in the generously oversized shapes I craved, nobody could compete with Lazy Oaf's shirts....but then....Monki, I confess, I'm hooked, are churning them out on a bi-weekly bases and at really great prices and sizes that fit all.

There was still a prominant gap in the market for larger girls to be able to get plus size garms with the oversizing style they wanted too. One of my close friends is a size 18 and is literally buzzing about the Monki oversized shirts fitting her the way they fit me (I'm a size 12 but always wear bigger sizes and often mens tops) Monki really have changed things for the plus sized fashionista!

I understand why Lazy Oaf garms only come in three sizes, they are an independent and despite the garms being more expensive than Monki's cheap as chips fashion gems, they are limited editions, plus their size large is actually pretty large but I wouldn't go as far to say it would definitely fit a size 18.

The battle goes on between the high street and the independents, Lazy Oaf were certainly doing the generous oversizing thing first but let's not feel too sorry for them just yet. In terms of resale Lazy garms are so sought after, due to their limited edition drops and mass international following, that you could sell on your worn Lazy Oaf items for more than you paid for them originally. Shame the independents aren't making that return for themselves eh? Perhaps this is why the prices for the latest drops of Lazy Oaf goodies are rising, the indies need to get some of those rewards for themselves somehow and there is certainly a market for it!

Where else can you source some oversized shirt goodness?? Vintage and thrift/charity shops have loads of oversized mens shirts available, try on the biggest sizes and play around with it. Pinstripes are looking to be a big thing over the next year too, so roll the sleeves up and style it out! This style is for the boys too not just the grrrls!

I just love oversized shirts, all printed up with a contemporary graphic worn either buttoned all the way up or undone and layered over another top. Wear yours with leggings, jeans or if it's long enough, as a dress with tights this winter or some cute culottes (yes, culottes are not just for the summer! But, that's another story for another day...).

However you wear it, wear it big, it's a great investment that will see you right through to spring.

New Denims

Denim is big this season and perfect transitional fashion, here are the No Debutante faves of the season.....

Geek Chic Cuts
From geeky half mast crops to extended turned up hems the jeans cut continues to stay creative and fun in dark indigo shades to retro stonewash fades there, is a lot to choose from. Check out Ader Error and Unif for alternative style inspo

The Ultimate Denim Jacket
It's not just about jeans, the denim jacket is still around in vintage oversized, shearling style denims or jackets updated with added ruffles and embroideries as seen at Monki.

Boys in Blue
The crop Dickies style jean is popular with the boys this season from 80s stonewash, 70s patchwork or 90s indigo's, whatever your preferred decade from the catwalk fashionistas to street style lovers, it has to be cropped or turned up this winter, preferably with a pair of white sports socks underneath.

Jumpsuits are here to stay
With dungarees looking as strong as ever, the denim boilersuit has confidently become this seasons dare to wear staple. Not just for the brave the denim boilersuit comes in fitted styles, is super comfy and will keep you warm over the colder months, wear yours with a colourful poloneck underneath, same goes for those jumpsuits and dungarees.

Boilersuit from Urban Outfitters & Cute oversized jumpsuit from Monki

Retro Inspo
With retro sportswear and streetstyle heavily influencing and inspiring the catwalks, the sportswear styling has now made it to denim jeans with go faster stripes at Monki to a 1970s vibe added to styling with Adidas gazelles and sports tops and that shearling style denim jacket, denim styled  up with brights colours and stripes are a looking good this winter.

Debutante Denims
From an oversized denim slip and tasseled crop jeans from Monki to vintage cut 1950s jeans from Vivien of Holloway, these pieces will see me through all through the winter with added long sleeve tops, jackets, warm socks, Dr Martens and perhaps a little bit of double denim. Watch this space!

Spring Get Sprung - Part 2

It's the first of April! Whoop! But No Debutante ain't no April fool! The sun is out and I have given my slides the first proper wear of the year, without socks on this occasion.

No Debutante's transitional Spring colour palette features bright reds, blues and pinks, metallic mermaid blues, greens and silvers balanced out with some sharp monochromes. The shapes are oversized mixed with skinny bodycons, comfy sportswear items and reworked denim pieces. worn with sheers and metallic textures.

Here is part 2 of the Spring Get Sprung post which includes more transitional fashion looks and coincidentally starts with the first photograph of April, with me in my lovely Adidas slides! It's finally slide's season people, get excited! Oh! And I cut all my hair off and coloured it bright pink.....

It's Slides season baby!

October Transitions

As October 2016 began I was at the beach getting an end of the summer surf in before the cold weather arrives. The weather was great and the surf was good, without a pair of tights or a jacket in sight, not bad for October in England (or Porthcawl in Wales on this occasion). This brings me to the subject of transitional dressing, having to slowly add extra layers to your outfit can be quite daunting, you have to get creative and not just get yourself dressed up to then go and hide all your hard work underneath a warm coat....the whole look has to work, not just the first layer.  I personally have a collection of outer garments from knitwear, jackets and coats so that my whole outfit works, even when it's freezing, love your outerwear too!!

Here are few recent No Debutante style outfits where the transitional dressing has already started to sneak in. I refuse to go straight into full blast Autumn, I'm almost ignoring it, hoping it might go away.......
