Stripe it up

There is no doubt that this seasons favourite print is polka-dots but coming up close behind all the dotty fun are the stripes. Candy colours, rainbow stripes, glam stripes and monochromes are all big this season.

The super-sassy stripes are appearing on everything from jackets, sportswear, t-shirts, jumpsuits and co-ords. New shapes for this years stripes include tapered or flared trousers and maxi shirt dresses, wear yours with a matching co-ord or clash the stripes up with those polka-dots that we can't get enough of.

Remember horizontal stripes are best left with t-shirts, it's time for flattering, vertical stripes all the way this year so go get your stripes fix for the summer!

Monki really are on it for stripes this year but why not check out your local independent designers too?  Two of my Bristol faves are working the stripes; Neat Frontage, make amazing rainbow stripe co-ords and super cute pastel crop sweatshirts & Duvet Days source amazing retro prints (upcycled from duvet covers)& create the comfiest trousers ever, you can even get a matching top too! Yeeeesss!

Charity shops (and even your own wardrobe) can be great for breathing new life into retro style stripes. Urban Outfitters are currently selling 90s inspired striped crop tops for well over £30. Consider upcycling and charity shops before blowing your money, you'll also be the only person with your new upcycled stripe tee.

TIP ALERT!!! Find an old striped t-shirt (look in any male person in your lifes wardrobe, you'll find loads of them) and either crop the t-shirt off or knot it up at the front or the back and you have a perfect nineties inspired t-shirt, which can be worn as a crop top or a nipped in at the waist oversized tee. Boom!

Micro trends Feb 2018

As a fashion blogger and journalist I follow trends, I check out what's happening on the streets, on the catwalks, on social media, I am also influenced by films and music. I am not influenced by anything that is trending, if the masses are into it, then I am not. I want to be an individual, I take influence from both the past & current trends but will not religiously wear this seasons colour, well not on purpose anyway, I will also mix my latest garms with items that have been in my wardrobe for years.

Fashion designers help to influence your style and in turn they are influenced by each other, which is where the trends come from, including that ridiculous 'this seasons colour', that you should be wearing, a myth created by fashion magazines and corporates to sell more items! Who the hell says I can't wear last seasons colour? It just encourages me to wear it more, at least no-one else will be wearing it! Not to mention what a waste of materials, money & how unsustainable fast fashion is!

Here are a few micro trends that I have personally been influenced by lately, these images have been collected on pinterest and are my own little pot of trends that influence me and my style one way or another. I hope they inspire you too! Consider reworking your current wardrobe, buying less and perhaps making your own clothes? Expect more micro trends very soon up on the No Debutante blog!

Supercute at Lazy Oaf

Stop this super-cuteness Lazy Oaf, I want it all noooooow! Pink ribbons and ruffled sleeves and hems in candy colours?? All in super soft cotton jerseys too, quite possibly the cutest streetwear ever! Lazy Oaf can do no wrong! No Debutante loves Lazy Oaf!

Bright and Beautiful

I love these super bright printed dresses with matching tights from the Jeremy Scott & Tom Ford Fall 2018 collections. I've always had a thing for coloured tights, so this is a very exciting & inspiring look for me! Thigh high dresses, statement hair or headresses and big earrings. what's not to like here? Dayglo leopard print? Yes please!

Eighties styling at Urban Outfitters

The styling of this shoot from Urban Outfitters for AW17 is super exciting. Shell jackets mixed with slip dresses and slouch boots or a long faux fur worn with a sports top, ski-pants (yes! ski-pants are back) and a stiletto heel. This has to be the most fabulously styled retro collection ever! I need to find out my 80s slouch boots and pointed slip ons immediately!

Look into my eyes

There has been a lot of minimal eyeliner inspo happening over the past year, from small dots on your eyelids to artist graphic lines around the eyes, with the geometric memphis trend beginning to filter through into make up styles too. Glitter is still with us as is the strong brow and coloured mascara is slowly creeping back in, applied on the strong brows too. If you are not a statement outfit type of person, perhaps statement make up is for you?

Not just for men

Despite my love of make-up, frilly pink garms, colourful tights and 80s slip ons, I am a slave to being comfortable and often turn to mens fashion for comfortable clothing inspo. The menswear collections are now blurring with womenswear in a welcome blend of androgynous styling. I am not interested in whether an item has been made for a man or a woman, I am just interested in bright colours, prints and being comfortable!

Liam Hodges' camouflage and contrast blocking

Camouflage has always been a fave of mine and I am just loving the way Liam Hodges has used different panels on his army surplus style jacket and trousers, I am really into panel blocking at the moment, especially on trousers, and this is a perfect example of it. Camouflage and Converse it is then!

Brights and clashes at Libertine

I am loving the clashing printed streetwear and bright coloured striped knitwear at Libertine for AW 2018. I am also obsessed with printed or bright coloured trousers at the moment, they are pretty hard to find on the high street. I have found a couple of brilliant polka-dot and striped pairs at Monki recently but I am now inspired to make my own in big bold colours and prints!

New Denims

Denim is big this season and perfect transitional fashion, here are the No Debutante faves of the season.....

Geek Chic Cuts
From geeky half mast crops to extended turned up hems the jeans cut continues to stay creative and fun in dark indigo shades to retro stonewash fades there, is a lot to choose from. Check out Ader Error and Unif for alternative style inspo

The Ultimate Denim Jacket
It's not just about jeans, the denim jacket is still around in vintage oversized, shearling style denims or jackets updated with added ruffles and embroideries as seen at Monki.

Boys in Blue
The crop Dickies style jean is popular with the boys this season from 80s stonewash, 70s patchwork or 90s indigo's, whatever your preferred decade from the catwalk fashionistas to street style lovers, it has to be cropped or turned up this winter, preferably with a pair of white sports socks underneath.

Jumpsuits are here to stay
With dungarees looking as strong as ever, the denim boilersuit has confidently become this seasons dare to wear staple. Not just for the brave the denim boilersuit comes in fitted styles, is super comfy and will keep you warm over the colder months, wear yours with a colourful poloneck underneath, same goes for those jumpsuits and dungarees.

Retro Inspo
With retro sportswear and streetstyle heavily influencing and inspiring the catwalks, the sportswear styling has now made it to denim jeans with go faster stripes at Monki to a 1970s vibe added to styling with Adidas gazelles and sports tops and that shearling style denim jacket, denim styled  up with brights colours and stripes are a looking good this winter.

Debutante Denims
From an oversized denim slip and tasseled crop jeans from Monki to vintage cut 1950s jeans from Vivien of Holloway, these pieces will see me through all through the winter with added long sleeve tops, jackets, warm socks, Dr Martens and perhaps a little bit of double denim. Watch this space!

Old School

No Debutante loves Retro Sports style.

It's all about the oversized sweatshirts, skinny, baggy or crop t-shirts, Airtex sports vests, zip up jackets and of course sports socks and trainers. Adidas and Reebok Classics are number one on my list at the moment, mixed up with skate brands, streetwear with a few polka-dots chucked in here and there. It's all about your favourite label in Retro sports but that doesn't mean you can't wear a sports inspired item instead....

If you are looking to get some of your own retro sports head down to American Apparel for sports socks and Urban Outfitters for everything else. I can't even walk past Urban Outfitters in Bristol without wanting everything from the shop window display. They have perfected the Retro Sports trend this season. Check out your local designers too, here in Bristol we have a lot of talented fashion designers who love a bit of sports inspired streetwear. Check out my favourites That Thing, Neat Frontage and Fix Up Look Sharp.

So, you have your top half sorted with your t-shirts, zip up jackets and oversized sweatshirts and have accessorised up with your sports socks and trainers, what else are you going to wear?? This is pretty much a free for all, I have mixed my Retro sports up with denim shorts,  A-line skirts, flared crop jeans, bodycon, leggings, tartan, fruity print trousers and even a long maxi dress. Anything goes with this look, why not top it off with some graphic print big earrings for the girls or the big trend for 2016 for both girls and boys...Socks and sliders.

Sports Nostalgia

As you know I am a fan of sportswear or rather I am a fan of sportsluxe, streetstyle sportswear mixed with unconventional fashion garments. A 1970s Adidas Classic t-shirt worn with a 1950s circle skirt, Northern Soul stylee or Sports Goth'd up with a long black maxi skirt and American Apparel sports socks. Whatever happens you won't find No Debutante in a full on tracksuit and trainers ensemble, although if Lazy Oafs designed one....???? Never say never!

Today's post is about sports styling from the 1970s and 80s, I wore these bold graphic printed skinny sports zip up jackets and Adidas style tops and silky short shorts as a little kid (I was a child of the 80s) and then had a bit of a nostalgia moment with it as a teenager in the 1990s indie / Brit pop years circa 93-95 with the return of the Adidas classics and low top trainers like Puma States and Adidas Gazelles. I had a few years off the Old School sports style (as it was known in the fashion magazines of the time) but now I am all over it after finding all of my old hoarded 90s clothes in the loft at the beginning of the year and unveiling many Adidas Classic gems - keep hoarding people it pays off!!! I have a 'My Nineties wardrobe' post that will follow this blog post, I have been holding it back for a while for no good reason but it shall be revealed over the next week or so. Those who follow me on Instagram can find a few images from the shoot on the No Debutante Instagallery

It is not just me that has fallen back in love with Retro Sports as I browse through endless collections and Pinterest I realised I have ended up with a load of blog worthy images to share featuring bright coloured vintage Adidas t-shirts and jackets from 'My Nineties Wardrobe' plus a few images of my Pharrell Williams X Adidas tops purchased from Urban Outfitters. There are so much reworked unisex Adidas Classics currently available at Urban Outfitters they really have got it and run with it this year!
Chloe's SS 2016 collection has an array of vintage inspired sports zips up and contrast trim vests which look great (and very up No Debutante's street) worn with flowing grunge maxi skirts.
Fred Perry has brought it's '80s Casuals' inspired styling back with two tone graphic skinny zip up jackets and towelling graphic stripe polo shirts which I just love!
Topman had a brief encounter with retro sports with it's Northern Soul inspired AW15 menswear range which unfortunately is not reflected in it's High Street stores this season.
I had to include images from the Anya Hindemarch SS 2016 collection. I fell in love with it instantly, it was the Gym club inspired graphic print leotards that caught my eye and take me back to the days of school gym clubs and Majorettes during the 1980s where the two tone graphic leotard was the item of choice! I want them all!!
Lastly, I had to share the mens footwear image sourced from the brilliant Fashiongrunge blog, No Debutante loves the low top vans, white long sports socks and half mast wide leg jeans, a look that will scare many but is a nostalgic nineties dream to me!
