Organic Basics: a sustainable alternative to activewear

As a big supporter of sustainable and ethical fashion I was happy to try out these activewear garms for Organic Basics.

Using carefully selected, environmentally friendly fabrics and factories that care about their impact on the planet, Organic Basics are so transparent at every step of production.  I like the way they have so much info on their website about the fabrics they use and the family-run factories they work with too. They really have put the effort and time in to be as sustainably conscious as they can.

There are some great insights into the factories from using recycled nylon threads to create their SilverTech™ Activewear and one factory repurposing all of their fabric scraps as furniture upholstery, which is a rather good idea, isn't it?

Organic Basics aim to create products that will last. Their range is minimal yet contemporary and graphic, with a softer more natural focus on activewear with less go-faster stripes and a more basic 90s Calvin Klein ad aesthetic, which isn't a bad thing.

Offering incredibly soft and comfortable fabrics (that are sustainably made remember!) on a range of underwear and activewear pieces in basic black, white and muted shades in taupe, burgundy and soft greys, there really is something for everyone, well adults!

From triangle shaped soft bras, seamless bodysuits, vest tops, sports crop tops (my fave) and pants...

Oh my gosh, I just cannot bear the word briefs, I know, I know that's what most retailers call them but I just can't do it or knickers! That's even worse...! If I say pants that's what I mean. If you are American then pants means a totally different thing again.....I digress.

There are also t-shirts, active leggings, cycle shorts and sports socks. The latter making frequent appearances here at No Debutante over the years and I still love them! They were a no-brainer for my selection of the Organic Basics range.

My chosen item after the sports socks was the SilverTech™ Active Workout Bra.

The first reason is that I love crop top shaped vests and the second is I need a new sports bra to wear running and for yoga (and hopefully encourage me to do more of this active stuff!).  This super soft but durable work out bra, which it made from 89% recycled nylon, is also breathable and doesn't need washing as often either! It's proper comfy too!

Thanks to Organic Basics for reaching out to a fellow sustainable fashion supporter and if you lovely lot want a piece of Organic Basics goodness add EMMAGOB to your order for a sweet 10% discount*

Together we can keep spreading the sustainable fashion word, to slow fashion right down and help save the planet. Right on sistas and bruvvas!

The No Debutante Top 10 most read posts of 2018

We have reached the end of 2018 fashionistas! It's been a crazy mad year and it's time to show you the Top 10 and most read No Debutante blog posts of the year!

In previous years, I have shared my 'what I wore' outfits of the year and, although I do still share my colourful (and independent designer reppin') outfits with you all, the No Debutante fashion blog is now more about sharing the love than what's new in my wardrobe and I think these 'most read' posts reflect that.

I have also noticed that I am pretty consistent with the amount of blog posts I can physically create each year with 50 posts being the average, I managed a firm 47 posts (including this one) in 2018. Not bad for a person with 3 kids, two jobs, a band and a club night!

From Instagram fashion crushes to body positivity to Bristol fashionistas to women in music, the No Debutante blog has covered many subjects and fashion related news over the past year.

Here they are then, your Top 10 most read posts of 2018....drumroll please....

The most read post of 2018 is  Bristol's finest Insta fashionistas

No Debutante shares her Top 5 Instagram faves which included Laa Woof, Duvet Days, Tezla Designs, She Shirts and That Thing! All amazing and inspiring local, independent fashion brands and designers. Yeeeessssss!

Coming up closely in second place, is no surprise as this campaign was welcomed with open arms by everyone that came across it the Magnificent Mermaids post featured the female empowering swimwear brand Mermaid in England who use real models of every shape and size in their body positive photo shoots. No Debutante got involved too and met some awesome, brave and inspiring women along the way.

NME Award female nominees 2018

2018 saw a change in the way the industry recognised women in music with the Female empowerment at nme awards blog post. Woman are still not where we should be in the industry but this is a positive start and an honest review. Let's see how this changes in 2019! This post made it inti the Top 5 and rightly so!

An honour to have made it into the Top 10 blog posts of the year You go girl was actually my first post of 2018 and see's me sharing all the things I've been involved with from writing to DJing to being a Mum. Thank you to every one who took the time to read this post!

Emotional Waterfall Art

Following the success of what turned out to be the most read No Debutante blog post of the year comes Bristol's finest insta fashionistas July 2018 post, that saw local fashionistas that I was crushing on insta in the summer of 2018, the list includes Zedhead Headwear, Emotional Waterfall Art, Dulcie's Feathers, Kokomo and Kuccia.

My fave Bristol festival had to get into this top ten list Love saves the day again features LSTD 2018 from No Debutante's eyes, expect amazing festival fashion, female djs, fun and an unexpected meeting with Loyle Carner! Roll on 2019!

Back in March I fell in love with a kidswear photoshoot in Hooligan's Magazine and had to share it. It was loved enough by you fashionistas to make it into the Top 10! Little fashionistas at Hooligans magazine

Manners London catsuits

I discovered many new independent fashion brands in 2018 and one of them is the London based bodycon brand Mind Your Manners introduced to me by a big Bristolian supporter of independent creatives - Joh Rindom from That Thing. I own a Manners London catsuit and I love it, everyone loves it! I'm so glad this post has made it to the No Debutante Top 10 most read blog posts of 2018!

It''s been a fantastic year on the No Debutante blog and I'd like to add a few more of the most recent blog posts to this list as maybe they haven't been read quite as much as the Top 10 posts yet but have still managed to get your attention!

In Confessions of a big holiday packer  I mostly share my opinions on holiday packing and how I refuse to pack light. The Sonic Youth post features some photographs I took for my son Lucian's Instagram account that turned into a full on photoshoot that I really love.

That Thing AW 18 collection

Another very popular recent post was the That Thing AW18 launch party from November 2018 and Super Stylin' took me back to my blogging roots and featured a few of my recent outfits in the Autumn of 2018.

The Island Pop up Christmas shop Bristol, 2018

Lastly the most recent post that is still getting daily reads is the Have yourself a very local Christmas post featuring The Island pop up Christmas shop here in Bristol, which hopefully encouraged you all to support local and independent creatives this year when buying gifts!

Confessions of a big holiday packer

If anything, this unusually hot UK summer had given me a head start on what to wear and pack for the annual family summer holiday trip (It was Majorca this year...again...we love Majorca).

I had noticed that in previous years I would often pack clothes that I might wear if I was on holiday in a hot country, a just incaser, but this year I've had a lot of practise in choosing summer outfits so I came to the conclusion that 'if I haven't worn it this summer, it ain't coming on holiday!' However, I am not a light packer....

A handful of garms for our family holiday wardrobes

The Guardian fashion editor Jess Cartner-Morley put it best in her 2017 article Don't pack light pack clever about holiday packing essentials, where she announced that she 'didn't trust people who pack light, they are smug gits!' Correct! If I want to take everything on my holiday with me, I am going to bloody take everything on my holiday with me!

If you are happy washing out your families pants and t-shirts whilst on your holiday then good for you! I won't be joining you. When I'm on holiday, I've got an important meeting with a sun bed, a good book and a glass of Sangria.

Obligatory plane selfie

Whilst researching peoples compulsion to pack light, I came across the phenomena that is environmentally friendly packing cubes....Can I ask what is this obsession (especially with pinterest users) with packing cubes? WTAF? They were apparently designed to replace those plastic carrier bags you've been popping your shoes and dirty washing in, I am a big supporter of getting rid of plastics but surely by now we are all owners of canvas style bags for life and if we really need extra bags we can use one of those? It's more environmentally sound to use a bag you already own, isn't it?

Before packing cubes were invented were people going out of their way to purchase plastic bags for their holiday packing? I think not. If pinterest is anything to go by these cubes were designed for the packing obsessive, a person who has far too much time on their hands, a person who is happy individually packing little bundles of garments and gubbins into separate packing cubes, just to make their case look nice and neat. Stand aside saddo's I've got a handful of socks that need wedging down the sides of my already heavily packed case!

It's late but we arrive at the most beautiful Majorcan Finka

I have three kids (four if you include my husband who seriously packs more beach toys than the kids do! He even managed to ram his skateboard in the case this year!) so yeah, we have a lot of stuff. One good thing we do for the environment is we reuse our inflatables and don't dump and buy like so many seem to do on each trip. So that's four kids, Me and lots of clothes, we usually go for around ten days, maybe we'll go out at night, will we need two outfits on some days? How much stuff do we take?

Family beach selfie with the kids and my Mum!

I find we double up and reuse t-shirts and shorts (that don't get ice cream all over them) and the kids practically live in swimwear so that's ten outfits for ten days, that covers any trips out and ice-cream spillages, no need for extra garms and certainly no need to spend my holidays washing clothes!

I've not worn heels for about two years, it's all about the comfort right here, so I only need to take sliders and a couple of pairs of trainers, that's practically all I've worn all summer anyway. We are not a family who glams up to go out, we dress comfortably, it's not about how pressed and brand new we look. You can tell when a family has bought  a whole new wardrobe for their holidays, it makes me nauseous, I imagine the waste and the big bag of garms sent to the charity shop as the winter approaches.

One of the few moments we weren't wearing swimwear! This Duvet Days co-ord was just perfect for hot summer nights!

So, how did we cram our whole lives into these five cases, yes five! My husband Phil even got us extra carry-ons this year, even I thought that was a bit extreme! Although I will never consider a carry on case each unless we were going for a shorter holiday, I do take one swimwear item, toothbrush, minimal make up and any meds, as well as the usual travel stuff passports etc, in my carry on bag. Ever had your luggage go missing when you reach your holiday destination? We have, and guess what was in the missing case?! Never again!

In conclusion, now we have returned from our amazing summer holiday, in all seriousness how successful was this years holiday pack?

I have to confess to bringing home a case with many unworn clothes inside! This year Majorca was very, very hot, this combined with it being a different kind of holiday for us, less resort holiday and more laid back hanging out at our beautiful Finka in the Majorcan countryside, we literally spent the whole day in swimwear, unless we ventured out in the car to the beach or to a restaurant. We did use all of the inflatables, towels and beach paraphernalia that contributed to a large part of our holiday packing so it's never over-packing to take these items.

My morning view

Personally, I had a few pairs of trackies and loose trousers I didn't wear due to the heat, Phil wore less short sleeve shirts/ t-shirts as we didn't go out every night and the same with the kids. Sylvie had two super cute hareem jumpsuits that she refused to wear as she was too hot.

We totally lucked out on the weather so I don't mind lugging back the unworn clothes and I am still standing by packing what you want! As a Brit we always say 'Be prepared for every weather eventuality' and yes, I did pack an umbrella and it did rain.....once (umbrella unused).

Why shouldn't I pack lots of garms? I am a fashion blogger and a fashion editor, I need to look good and have a variety of outfits to choose from, I took a wardrobe of swimwear garms alone and I am happy with that! Capsule wardrobes just don't seem to work for me, I change my mind too much and don't like to be restricted in fashion!

I think it's amazing how we managed to fit our whole life into five cases for ten days, my gosh you should see how much we take for a weekend camping!

Hope you had a great summer!

Upcycling old t shirts fashion vlog (no sewing needed)

Hey Fashionistas!

Sorry for the lack of posts of late, I have been spending much deserved time with my lil' family on a camping trip and attending my fave Bristol festival Love Saves The Day (watch this space for more on all that very soon).

I filmed this vlog the same day as I wrote my last blog post Stripe it up and have seriously only just found the time to edit the vid.

Did you know No Debutante aka Emma Gorton-Ellicott has a YouTube channel

It's been a VERY slow burner but what's the rush? I'm just sharing content when I can and I hope you enjoy my  lil' vids.

This fashion tutorial takes a quick look at how to style up and upcycle old t-shirts No Debutante style,  I was inspired to do this vid after seeing those upcycled t-shirts at Urban Outfitters (featured in the last blog post) and just wanted to let you lot know that you can recreate those t-shirts for free!

To link up with the last blog post, I have focused on retro striped t-shirts this time but it's all about the creativity and sustainability at the end of the day. Watch the vid and give it a go!

Subscribe to the No Debutante YouTube channel and please leave comments so we can focus on what you want to see more of.

Sista Fashionistas

I have many fabulous & creative friends, each have their own style & dress well, but there is one friend who is positively on the same fashion wave length as me. We barely see each other anymore & live in different cities but we always seem to rock up with similar looks. My fashion twin is Selena,we are sista fashionista's, who are inspired by street style, bright colours, clashing prints & have been working the Harajuku girl look since the early noughties.

Streetstyle devotees No Debutante & Dilly Foxtrot on our recent meet up

I met Selena when I lived in Leicester (where I also went to uni), at the time we both liked skate style & punk so were already on a similar fashion vibe, we then discovered Fruits, a Japanese street style book & magazine that featured quirky, Japanese kids from Tokyo, wearing the most amazing outfits. I was hooked from the moment I bought that book & went on a hunt to buy as many stripey long socks & brightly coloured tights as I could to perfect my Harajuku (the area in Tokyo where many of the Fruits photographs were taken) look. Independently to me, Selena was doing the same thing.

Winter layering featuring my new favourite polka dot trousers, a polo neck & a Fix Up Look Sharp sweatshirt.

I am not as influenced by Tokyo fashion as I used to be, the original Harajuku scene ended years ago & Fruits Magazine, sadly, no longer exists. It was also kinda ruined a bit for both Selena & I by Gwen Stefani (who was one of Selena's style icons up until this point) Gwen in 2005, announced she had discovered a new look & started the Harajuku Lovers perfumes, had the 'Harajuku Girls' dancers in her shows & just completely took it for herself, Harajuku had gone mainstream, everyone was into it.

The Fruits style had been sold out to the corporate giants & whenever something starts 'trending' like that I immediately jump off the bandwagon. Selena and I were late-comers to the scene ourselves back in 2001, as the Harajuku style was first documented by Fruits creator & photographer Shoichi Aoki back in 1997. I, like a lot of people, wanted to remain unique in my style, so the popularisation of kawaii fashion was a fashion nightmare for me, the high street went Harajuku! Nooooo!

Selena rocking her layers in a mustard jumper & tights, with a cute monochrome shirt & camouflage shorts.
"I got the shorts in the mens department in Primark"

There is another side to the Fruits style that I am not too comfortable with; these Japanese kids were mass buying clothes, they were from comfortable backgrounds, had disposable incomes & nearly everything they wore was branded with labels from Vivienne Westwood to Super Lovers. It was more bling than the DIY kawaii-punk style that it first appeared to be; although the styling was amazing, there was a price to pay for kawaii fashion & that's not just lining the pockets of big brands, it was also wasteful, unsustainable & ethically bad. Disposable fashion is not something I want to be associated with.

I took my inspiration from the styling alone, there was no way I could afford Comme des Garcons & Jean Paul Gaultier, so I became inspired to make my own clothes & recreate the look mixing my existing wardrobe with clothes I had created & contemporary items from the high street. The Fruits styling was always about the accessories too, so that was another easier way to covet the style, I am highly inspired by streetstyle these days but the roots to my look stem from Fruits magazine & a need to wear playful, comfortable, non-conformist fashion.

Don't forget the twinning short crop pink hairdos - another fashion coincidence!

Selena is also a fashion blogger & is known as Dilly Foxtrot Investigates in the blogging community, the blog is based around childrenswear, as Selena (like me) also used to be a childrenwear designer & (like me) had to put a hold on her fashion career to look after her (yes, like me again) three children (I told you we were fashion twins) & (there is a pattern emerging here.....like me) started a fashion blog to keep spreading the fashion love whilst looking after small children; blogging was a away in, to remain in the fashion industry & by any means necessary!

The Dilly Foxtrot Investigates blog covers topics from raising children to her latest fashion obsessions. I personally get just as much fashion inspo from childrenswear as I do from adult fashion, the colours, prints & shapes are always so playful, I'm gonna dress like a kid for the rest of my life! Being a blogger, Selena also gets it that I love to document what people wear, many friends like fashion but aren't too keen to have me sharing their looks on my instagram & blog, which I totally respect, Selena let's me photograph her which is inspiring & much more fun!

Modern vintage twinning back in 2003

Despite our love of playful styling Selena & I are still inspired by underground fashion trends & streetstyle, which is why, even after not seeing each other for a year, except on Instagram (which we both love), we still manage to have followed similar fashion routes & end up looking like we planned to dress the same way. It's laughable really, as we both get comments from people about the way we dress, we know we don't dress the same as the people around us but somehow we seem to follow the same fashion paths without being influenced by each other. As Selena put it at our most recent meet up "People think I am unique, that nobody else dresses like me but I tell them, there are thousands of people who dress like me, all over the world, I follow them on Instagram!".

We both agree that we love Instagram, it is so friendly, people actually talk & compliment you, there are so many different people to follow & it's great to connect with fashionistas all over the world who have the same fashion vision as you, which was a connection we didn't have before social media. This platform really works, if you don't get hung up on how many followers you have, blissfully ignore the false/ like for like followers & just follow people that generally inspire you, it will make you feel happy, supported & inspired in a positive safe place. Spread the fashion love we say & find your fashion twins they are in this big world somewhere, in their thousands!

The Gem of Lazy Oaf

Gemma Sheil is an illustrator, a fashion designer & the creative brains behind Lazy Oaf. You know how much No Debutante loves Lazy Oaf, don't you?

I had to feature Gemma in today's post as a contemporary fashion designer whose fashion brand & garms influence so many fashionistas & designers, including me! I often get many questions & compliments about my Lazy Oaf garms when I wear them & since International Women's Day is on the horizon, I had to give this inspiring, creative & successful female a mention!

Lazy Oaf Rainbow Cardigan

Lazy Oaf, as a brand, has done everything correctly, from the quirky styling, the super-cute colours, the artwork & the whole premise of Lazy Oaf works so well together. You just get it, the fun words on garms about being lazy & bored mashed up with cute styles, characters & colourways, on (always) generously cut garments (it just had to be a women that got this so right) creating colourful streetwear in shapes that are always on point & usually way ahead of the curve!

Sweet ruffles at Lazy Oaf

Gemma started selling her hand printed garms on Spitifields market, printing t-shirts from her Dad's garage, the bespoke range became so successful that Gemma & Lazy Oaf relocated to their flagship store in Soho where they have been ever since.

Lazy Oaf Mens Trip Out hoodie

The store itself is like a fun house of colour, mixing quirky graphics with modernist interior design with a soft, pastel edge. I love it so much that I want to decorate my house like the Lazy Oaf shop, everything Lazy Oaf do is on it!

Amazing Lazy Oaf Shop Interiors

Gemma has now launched a new label named G.E.M which celebrates being a girl & what that means to her, influenced by strong women including Madonna & Bjork, who play around with their indentities and create new personas. This is mixed with 80s glamour and Soho punk influences, creating a range of garms to wear to be rebellious and not do what you are told!

This girl is so inspiring as a fashion designer, creative and feminist. Yes, Gemma Sheil! Keep on, Keeping it weird!
