Typical Freaks Spring/Summer 18 Lookbook faves

Just over a year ago I shared the Typical Freaks love with you all here on the No Debutante blog. I am always so inspired by independent designers that incorporate bright colours, inspiring cutting skills and their own graphic prints into their creations. Typical Freaks epitomise this style and still create handmade prints covering voluminous shapes and staying true to their kawaii punk beginnings, seven collections in as Typical Freaks.

Here are some of the No Debutante faves from the Spring/Summer 18 Lookbook
The colours mix together lush greens and blues with bold yellow, pretty pinks with contrasting greys and bright oranges, in the familiar Typical Freaks sea urchin style abstract prints, the candy coloured vertical stripes and an appearance of a new monkey print outlined in black, Keith Haring styleShapes are voluminous and billowing, in fun childlike t-shirts and dresses, with white denim style cottons printed up or in full on bold and summery colours. Frills feature heavily again, with elasticated style gathers appearing on dresses and trousers in a big mash up of kawaii punk sportswear that looks super bright and super comfy! The styling is topped off with bold coloured eyes or lips, printed socks and a return of the white sandal this summer! Nice!

The last image is from Typical Freaks AW17 Lookbook, this outfit is amazing, look at the frills, the oversized cut and the prints for starters! It also shows you how versatile fashion is becoming with many designers now opting for unisex garms for all. I think we are a bit early on in the day to see gender specific areas banished from clothing stores but there certainly is a change in the air within the genres of fashion at the moment, which is both inspiring and exciting!

Catching up with Bristol 24/7

Oh my gosh it is hot, hot, hot, here in Bristol! We are literally melting, we love it but our little English houses literally can't take the heat! With Glastonbury Festival on the horizon, which looks to be a scorcher, we are learning how to dress for the summer months, we have to 'learn' how to dress for this sort of heat as we only dress this way when we are off on our holidays and hanging out by the pool, we have no idea how to respond to wearing a very light summery outfit to work!? Can't I just wear my bikini?

Here's a little catch-up with some of No Debutante's articles for Bristol 24/7 from the past few months spreading the Bristol fashion love as Fashion Editor, Emma Gorton-Ellicott.

Pretty Neat

Neat Frontage are a Bristol based design duo which includes Ruth Strugnell (also from Bristol's Fix Up Look Sharp) & Gemma Pope who specialise in creating one-off handmade streetwear  garms mixed with festival style, sportswear & bright colours! From metallic bodycon unitards, jazzy printed tailored items to block print oversized sweatshirts Neat Frontage know how to make you stand out from the crowd whether you are at a festival, a club night or just hanging out, Neat Frontage will brighten up your day with a pop!

No Debutante visited Neat Frontage in their vibrant & creative studio at The Island, Bristol to find out where the magic happens.....and to borrow some Neat Frontage goodies for a fashion shoot but more on that very soon! Coincidentally the Neat Frontage ladies also share their space with another No Debutante fave from the Bristol Fashion scene, Terri Young from Tezla Designs. Unfortunately, Terri was not around to chat but it was great to see the Tezla creative space & to be in the creative environment of some of Bristol's fashion family, I have to say it was very inspiring, a room full of dress mannequins, plants and clothing.... my gosh, I wanted to get my fabric shears out & start cutting up my imaginary new collection there & then!

The Neat Frontage girls are always so bubbly & full of fun and have a hundred ideas & plans for what they are doing next whilst carrying out several projects at once & working their day jobs too! Its good to meet people who's lives also seem to be consumed by so many creative things at once whilst trying to support themselves (& in my case, their families) to make it all work. Bristol is not full of dreamers, it is full of do'ers, who will try their hardest to succeed whilst remaining inspired, creating a beautiful Bristol. Don't get me started on how Bristol needs to support its local designers....Bristol Fashion week??? Pah!

Neat Frontage are currently working on their latest collection & very kindly let me take a sneak preview, the stand out pieces at this point are the sheer black bodysuits with bold 90s inspired, block coloured shaped appliques, a beautiful matching block appliqued sheer kimono (everyone wants this piece of magic), cute black culottes with sportswear inspired sequined or metallic side panels & the very comfy oversized unisex sweatshirts in Mondrian style grids and jazzy prints that have pockets in, nothing gets me more excited then a dress or sweatshirt with pockets in! No Debutante loves this collection as does everyone I have shown it to! Nice One ladeez! Pow!

Watch this space for more on the Neat Frontage collection & the Bristol Fashion collaboration photoshoot featuring No Debutante, Anthony Prothero Photography, Neat Frontage, Tezla Designs, That Thing, House of Junk, House of Bendy & Jokoto Clothing.

To The Moon and back again

Due to the popularity of collabs, pop up stores and genre mash ups, I was interested to attend the To The Moon shop launch party in Bristol to see how a collaboration of a bar and fashion boutique works and what the inspiration was behind it.
All I knew was the recently opened To The Moon Bar (which is based in the up and coming Old Market area in Bristol) was a modern vintage inspired bar specialising in cocktails and locally sourced drinks. As the second part of their launch the To The Moon family planned to open a fashion boutique, next door to the bar, selling sustainable fashion (also locally sourced). I was intrigued to find out how this would work as a business venture especially since fashion and drinking are two of my favourite things!

I arrived alone at the busy To The Moon bar as we awaited the shop opening. The bar is tiny but quaint, I love little bars like this, I find them homely and friendly, it's impossible not to talk to people in these cosy spaces. I decided I would definitely come to the bar again but it was the fashion I was interested in on this occasion. The door to the side of the bar opened and we were in another adjoining room. The To The Moon boutique stocked bespoke, sustainable fashion garments, shoes, jewellery and accessories all handmade (yes, even the shoes) Gemma from To the moon explained that she wanted to find high fashion sustainable items rather than the ethically designed 'Hippy Mom' items in naturally dyed fabrics that are usually associated with sustainable fashion.
This is something that I (No Debutante) feel very strongly about too, why do things have to look like they are second hand or handmade (sometimes badly) to make it sustainable??. We can reuse without losing the quality of the structure, cut and styling, creating brand new pieces from something old. There is a lot happening in Bristol for sustainable fashion but the support for Bristol Fashion in general is not really there from anyone outside Bristol. Unless you are in London the top fashion mags are just not interested in you and your product. Perhaps it's because we are further away from the (so called) fashion hub and capital city London, that the editors are not likely to find us on their lunch breaks or perhaps they are just not interested, maybe too lazy (when they have everything on their doorstep), to find out what is going on further afield.

Gemma from To the Moon had come to the same conclusion as me about the lack of support for Bristol fashion, sustainable or not, despite Bristol being a creative Hub with a lot happening.
Jeez, Bristol Fashion week, is held at The Mall for shops in The Mall and any bloggers who are invited along are the type of Fashion bloggers who only buy from the High Street anyway, wearing regurgitated fashion that everyone else is wearing in the same way. Where is the creativity in that?

Clearly, if we want the job done properly we have to do it ourselves! Gemma has opened To The Moon to help Bristol fashion alongside other Bristol Fashion Boutiques including That Thing and Collab and even bloggers like myself, to encourage, represent and promote all things Bristol Fashion.
I see great things emerging for Bristol Fashion and perhaps we will have our own version of Bristol Fashion week supported by local independent businesses and creatives in the near future.

The To The Moon Boutique currently stocks Antiform, Jokoto, Red Bird Makes, Ottowin Footwear, Prior Made, Drum and Fife with hopes to showcase fashion students work and act as a creative hub for other designers to sell their products at the boutique.
